Nolan Ryan strikes out his 3,509th batter and passes Walter Johnson on the all-time strikeouts list.

Nolan Ryan was one of the greatest pitchers of all-time.  He was consistent, fearless, and he had durability as he pitched for 27 seasons.

It was on this day, April 27th, 1983, that Nolan Ryan set the Major League Baseball record for all-time strikeouts.  He accomplished this when he recorded the 3,509th strikeout of his career.  He broke Walter Johnson’s record which had been set by Walter Johnson some 56 years earlier

Nolan Ryan ended his amazing career with 5,714 career strikeouts.  And with today’s pitchers stuck to a pitch count and a 5 man rotation, it is extremely unlikely that Nolan’s record will ever be broken.
