YouTube hosts presidential debates

On this day, July 23rd, in 2007, CNN and YouTube collaborated to put out a series of televised debates where US presidential hopefuls addressed questions submitted through the social networking site. The series that aired on this date was for the Democratic Party and took place in Charleston, South Carolina.

The eight candidates that were present in this debate included: Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Mike Gravel, Chris Dodd, Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson, and John Edwards. Shortly after the introduction of the debate via a YouTube video, the candidates were challenged to actually answer the questions instead of beating around the bush—a common problem that occurs in most debates.

After the debate ended, focus groups were interviewed by CNN and of the Democrat candidates, it was concluded that Barack Obama was the candidate who most understood their issues. The debate had an average of 2.6 million viewers—making it the second-most-watched debate of the 2007 television series.
