Yankees Sweep Padres in World Series

In October of 1998, the stage was set for the 94th World Series as the AL’s New York Yankees were set to face the NL’s San Diego Padres.  For the Padres, the 1994 World Series marked the franchise’s second appearance, which was far from the case for the Yankees, who had won 23 championships.  The Yankees were favored to win the series and in the first three games they showed why, beating the Padres by a combined 10 runs.

On this day, October 21st, in 1998, the Yankees swept the San Diego Padres to win their 24th World Championship. The Padres looked to rally in the fourth game, but ultimately failed, losing by a score of 3-0 at home. With the win, the Yankees capped off one of the best seasons in baseball history with a total of 125 wins.

The Yankees’ 24th championship set a new record for the MLB, strengthening their reign as baseball’s winningest franchise.  The mark also tied the Yankees for most championship wins by a North American team in any professional sport.
