The student radio station of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, called WXYC, provides the first ever internet radio broadcast.

Radio transmissions date back in history to the late 19th Century. However, they didn’t become a staple in the household until later. The “Golden Age” for radios in America lasted from the 1920s to the 1950s. During this time, families gathered around to hear news, music, variety shows, and comedies on the radio before the invention of the television.

On this day, November 7th, in 1994, the student radio station at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, called WXYC, provided the first ever Internet radio broadcast.

The student-run WXYC broadcasts 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. It is known for its eclectic mixture of music genres. They attempt to broadcast lesser-known music from local artists in Chapel Hill or the greater North Carolina area. Listeners tune in from as far away as the American Northeast and the UK, and broadcasts can be accessed on iTunes as well.
