Outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theater, concrete blocks bear the imprints of signatures, footprints, and handprints of popular motion picture stars. The striking landmark in Los Angeles has also housed a number of famous premieres.

It was on this day, August 15th, in 1939 that the Wizard of Oz premiered at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

Judy Garland’s 1939 edition of the film is the most famous version. At the time, it used state of the art special effects and Technicolor.  The film grossed $3 million in profits, which would be about $47.5 million today, and it is still highly praised by critics today.
