The one and only Willie Mays is elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame

Willie Mays, also known as The Say Hey Kid, was one of the best baseball players of all-time.  He was a five tool player in that he excelled at every facet of the game from hitting to running to fielding.

It was on this day, January 23rd, 1979, that the great WIllie Mays was elected into the Baseball Hall of Game.  409 of the 432 ballots voted to elect him in.

One of his most memorable moments was “The Catch.”  In a world series game, Mays helped lead the Giants to a win when he made an incredible over-the-shoulder running catch that would become iconic, widely considered one of the greatest plays ever made on the diamond.  This catch helped build Mays’ legacy, but it certainly doesn’t define his career as year in and year out. He played in an amazing 24 All-Star games and became part of an exclusive group of players to record over 600 home runs, with 660 in his career.
