Famous Quaker William Penn lands in what will be Pennsylvania.

The famous English real-estate entrepreneur and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, William Penn, was an early advocate of religious freedom and democracy, as noted by his good relations with the Lenape Indians. It was under his direction that the city of Philadelphia was planned and developed.

On this day October 29th, in 1682, famous Quaker William Penn lands in what will be Pennsylvania. After King Charles II handed over a large piece of his American land holdings to satisfy a large debt, Penn immediately sailed to America to take what was rightfully his.

Penn was one of the first supporters of colonial unification and urged all of the English colonies to gather under one Union. The democratic principles he held were used in the Pennsylvania Frame of Government and later served as inspiration for the United States Constitution.
