The great one, Wayne Gretzky, breaks the NHL record with 802 goals scored

Often in Sports, the best players don’t set the major all-time records.  For instance, Michael Jordan didn’t score the most points in NBA history, and Babe Ruth doesn’t hold the all-time home run record.   However, in hockey, this is certainly not the case.

It was on this day, March 23rd, 1994, that Wayne Gretzky broke the NHL record for goal scored.  Gretzky did this by scoring his 802 goal against while playing for the Los Angeles Kings against the Vancouver Canucks.

The record Wayne set was all the more special as he passed his childhood idol, Gordie Howe, on the all-time scoring list.  The great one would finish with 894 regular season goals and 122 post-season goals – giving him a total of 1,016 NHL goals.
