The first town to be named after George Washington, Washington, NC, is incorporated.

Colonel James Bonner graciously decided to donate land and create a city in honor of an American hero. Not many people can claim to having done such a thing. The town of Washington, North Carolina was founded in 1776.

On this day April 13th, in 1782, the city of Washington, North Carolina is incorporated. Washington is a small city roughly 8.5 sq. miles.  As of 2010, the city’s population was 9,774. Small. Yet, none the less this is the first city to be named in honor of George Washington

Many territories have been named in honor of George Washington, including: Washington (state), Washington D.C. (U.S. Captial), Georgetown (home to Georgetown University), amongst many others.
