The Film “Victor/ Victoria” is adapted to a Broadway musical; Opens at Marquis Theater NY

Victor Victoria is a musical comedy film about homosexuality, sexual identity and transvestism.  The movie itself was a remake of Viktor und Viktoria, a German film.  A hit movie, it was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won the Academy Award for Original Music Score.

It was on this day, October 25, 1995, that the film Victor/ Victoria opened at Marquis Theater in New York.  The cast included Julie Andrews, Michael Nouri, Rachel York, Tony Roberts, Richard B. Shull, Rob Ashford, and Michael Cripe.  Andrews was nominated for a Tony Award, but rejected it because she felt that she should stand with the “egregiously overlooked” cast and crew instead.  Liza Minnelli stepped in for Andrews for a month and Raquel Welch replaced her until the musical’s end after Andrews had surgery to remove non-cancerous nodules from her throat.
