Venezuela becomes the first South American country to gain independence from Spain.

Venezuela is a luscious country filled with biodiversity, bordering Brazil, Guyana, and Colombia. Beginning in 1522 Venezuela was colonized by Spain, and although the natives resisted, the far superior methods and weapons of the Europeans quickly overtook them.

On this day July 5th, in 1811, Venezuela declares independence from Spain. Venezuela was the first Spanish colony to declare independence from the Monarchy of Spain. The Venezuelan War of Independence would wage on into 1823 when they would finally win their independence. This occurred during the reign of Joseph Bonaparte, whom Napoleon had placed on the Spanish throne in 1808, so it was a period when Spain’s morale was weak.

Since today over 200 years ago, Venezuela has gone through many regime changes, including democracy and dictatorship. It is shaped like an inverted triangle and has four temperature zones: Tropical, Dry, Temperate, and Polar. It is rich in petroleum and has a high rate of corruption in the government.
