The USA Women’s Ice Hockey team defeats Canada to win their first ever gold medal.

Many Americans remember when the USA men’s hockey team captivated the nation and won the Gold medal in the 1980 Olympics.  The upset win over Russia was called “The Miracle on Ice.”  However, many years later, the USA women’s ice hockey team would have a very exciting moment of their own.

It was on this day, February 17th, 1998, that the USA women’s hockey team beat Canada to win its first ever gold medal.  Played in Japan, the women outplayed Canada en route to a 3-1 Victory.

The USA women’s hockey team won all 5 of the games they played in at the 1998 Winter Olympic games. They dominated the field, scoring a total of 33 goals while only giving up 7 goals.  The champion game was played at the Big Hat Arena in Nagano, Japan and the women had a memorable celebration on the ice after the final buzzer rang.
