At the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA – the US women’s soccer team wins the World Cup on penalty kicks

When the USA faced China in the finals of the World Cup, it was a huge moment for USA women’s soccer.  Making
it even more important of a moment was the fact that the game was played on US soil.  It has been said to be the most exciting women’s sporting event of all-time.

It was on this day, July 10th, 1999, that the US women’s soccer team defeated China to win the world cup.  The game was played at the famous Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.  The game went into a shootout as neither team was able to score a goal during 120 minutes of soccer.

In the shootout, with the score tied at 4, Brandi Chastain had the chance to win the game for the USA.  After she scored the winning goal, she was mobbed by her teammates, and it remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of Women’s sports.  The cheering home crowd made the atmosphere that much more electric on the field.
