The University of Colorado wins its first ever college football title

Since 1890, the University of Colorado has taken pride in its football program. In the years that followed, the school won a variety of conference titles both on the state conferences level and eventually in the Big 8 as well. Despite their regional success, it would take the University of Colorado Buffaloes a century to capture their first national title.

One this day, January 2, in 1991, the University of Colorado won its first ever college football title after being voted #1 in the AP poll.  On the previous day, Colorado’s impressive record of 11-1-1 earned the team a trip to the Orange Bowl against #6 Notre Dame; a game that that they would win 10-9.

The 1990-1991 season proved to be one of the best seasons in Colorado Buffaloes history. That season the Buffaloes went undefeated in their conference and tied with #8 ranked Tennessee.  Despite their dominance, the 1991 season would actually end with a controversial split national championship decision. Although the University of Colorado won the AP voting, they came in second in the coaches poll by one vote.
