Since 1890, the University of Colorado has taken pride in its football program. In the years that followed, the school won a variety of conference titles both on the state conferences level and eventually in the Big 8 as well. Despite their regional success, it would take the University of Colorado Buffaloes a century to capture their first national title.
One this day, January 2, in 1991, the University of Colorado won its first ever college football title after being voted #1 in the AP poll. On the previous day, Colorado’s impressive record of 11-1-1 earned the team a trip to the Orange Bowl against #6 Notre Dame; a game that that they would win 10-9.
The 1990-1991 season proved to be one of the best seasons in Colorado Buffaloes history. That season the Buffaloes went undefeated in their conference and tied with #8 ranked Tennessee. Despite their dominance, the 1991 season would actually end with a controversial split national championship decision. Although the University of Colorado won the AP voting, they came in second in the coaches poll by one vote.
