UCLA defeats Purdue 92-72 to win its 5th college basketball championship in 6 years

In college basketball, the late 60s and early 70s were dominated by the UCLA Bruins.  No team has ever dominated an era with the consistency that the UCLA Bruins did.  It is for this reason that the great John Wooden is considered the greatest college basketball coach of all time.

On this day, March 22nd, 1969, UCLA defeated Purdue in the NCAA Championship game.  The win would give UCLA its 5th college basketball title in 6 seasons.

UCLA great Lew Alcindor, who would later change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.  UCLA would go on to win the title in 70, 71, 72, 73, and 75 – giving the school an unprecedented 10 NCAA titles over a 12 year period.
