During a boxing match, Mike Tyson bites off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s Ear

Controversy and Sports go hand in hand. Sometimes in Sports things happen that Hollywood would never accept as a movie script.  Weird things occur and the odder they are, the more people seem to end up talking about it.  And Mike Tyson was a boxer who many people talked as he was outstanding and he stirred up a lot of controversy.

It was on this day, June 28th, 1997, that Mike Tyson bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s Ear during a boxing match.  Tyson spit out the piece of the ear onto the boxing mat and when Referee Mills Lane saw it – he disqualified Tyson from the match and announced Holyfield the winner.

Tyson would later say that the head-butts from Hollyfield were the reason why he bit Hollyfield’s ear.  Tyson bit Evander’s ear earlier in the match – but the match continued.  After the match, Tyson’s license to box was revoked by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.  2 years later on the Oprah Winfrey show, Tyson apologized and Evander accepted his apology.  To this day, it remains one of the most talked about incidents to ever happen inside of a boxing ring.
