Transnistria proclaimed as Soviet republic; however, Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev declares the decision null and void.

The international recognition of Transnistria is a subject of great controversy due to the fact that it is a disputed region between Moldova and Ukraine. Although Transnistria declared itself independent in 1990, multiple countries do not recognize its sovereignty.

On this day September 2nd, in 1990, the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic unilaterally proclaimed itself a Soviet Republic separate from Moldova. This came right after the dissolution of the USSR, as former Soviet Republics were still scrambling to remake themselves.

Shortly after, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev signed a decree that stated that the proclamation of a Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Republic was null and void. Nevertheless, after the Moldovan Parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova, they acquired the territory of Transnistria and asked the Soviet Union to begin negotiations over the occupation in the disputed territories, which eventually led to the War of Transnistria.
