The Toronto Stock Exchange is created – grows to become the world’s third largest stock exchange.

The Toronto Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in Canada. It is also the third largest in North American and the seventh largest in the world by market capitalization. It is based in Canada’s largest city, Toronto, and represents a large variety of businesses from different countries around the world. The Toronto Stock Exchange lists various exchange-traded funds, split share corporations, income trusts, and investment funds. In addition, the exchange is the leader in the mining and oil and gas sector. There are more mining and oil and gas companies listed here than any other exchange in the world.

On this day, October 25th, 1861, twenty-four men gathered at the Masonic Hall to officially create the Toronto Stock Exchange. It was formally incorporated by an act of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1878.
