Tom Watson almost wins US Open, he would have been oldest player to win a major

Everybody loves an underdog.  Tom Watson came into the US open as one of the oldest most experienced players.   Being that he was past his prime, no one gave him a real chance to threaten the favorites in the tournament.  However Golf is a unique Sport whereby sometimes father time lets up a bit.

It was on this day, July 19th, 2009, that Tom Watson came within 1 stroke of winning the British Open.  At 59 years of age, Watson would have been the oldest player to ever win a major.  Stewart Cink surpassed Tom Watson in the 4-hole playoff, earning the championship.

On the 18th hole of the final round, Tom Watson had a 8 foot putt which would have given himself the title.  Had he sunk it – it would have been one of the famous putts of all-time.  However, the putt wasn’t even close, and Watson, unfortunately, was never able to recover during the playoff round.
