Tiger Woods Wins 3rd Major

Tiger Woods is one of the highest achieving golfers in history and the year 2000 was one of his most amazing years. In 2000, Woods successful won six consecutive tournaments, which culminated in a U.S. Open victory.

On this day, August 21st, in 2000, Tiger Woods won his 3rd major tournament, the U.S. Open.  This accomplishment marked the first professional golfer to do so since Ben Hogan in 1953.  During the tournament, Woods broke or tied nine tournament records with an impressive 10 shot lead over the competition.  Sports Illustrated declared Woods’ U.S. Open victory as the “greatest performance in golf history.”

At the young age of 24, Woods would go on to cap off 2000 by becoming the youngest golfer to achieve a Grand Slam, which is winning all of golf’s major in the same calendar year. Woods would go on to win the U.S. open two more times in 2002 and 2008.
