The Music City Miracle

After spending many years as the Oilers, Tennessee’s NFL franchise was renamed the Titans for the 1999 season.  Living up to their new name, the Titans were able to dominate in the regular season and earned a playoff berth.  While at home against the Buffalo Bills for the Wild Card round, it seemed that the Titans’ season was over after a Bills field goal that put the score at 16-15 with 16 seconds remaining.  As any sports fans knows however, if there is time on the clock, there is time for a miracle.

On this day, January 8th, in 2000, the Titans complete the “Music City Miracle.”  The play came on the ensuing kick-off return, which was first taken by Lorenzo Neal and then handed off to tight end Frank Wycheck.  Wycheck then threw a lateral pass the width of the field to Kevin Dyson who had a clear 75-yard path to the endzone. Wycheck’s path was controversial, as many claim that the pass was actually an illegal forward pass.  After an official review, referee Phil Luckett deemed the play legal and the Titans won the game 22-16.

The Music City Miracle propelled the Titans to two more playoff wins and a chance to compete for the Lombardi trophy at Super Bowl XXXIV.  Unfortunately, the Titans came one yard short of a title against the St. Louis Rams, with a final score of 23-16.
