In what is considered the greatest upset ever, Joe Namath and the Jets beat the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl.

Upsets have always been one of the great things about sports.  Anything can happen on any given day which is why they play the game.  In football, “Any Given Sunday” is a phrase often used to describe the fact that you truly don’t know what is going to happen in a given NFL game.

On this day, January 12th, in 1969, the NFL experienced what is considered its greatest upset ever. The New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III.  The Colts had been a heavy favorite as the vast majority of the public, media, and analysts hadn’t given the Jets a chance.

The game was played at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.  And what made this game so special is that Jets quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed the victory.  Before the game, Namath added to the intrigue when he promised that the Jets would win – and not only did his Jets win the game – he was named Most Valuable Player.
