The Drive

John Elway was the first overall pick in the 1983 draft by the Baltimore Colts (who then traded him to the Denver Broncos). He went on to surpass high expectations while becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.  In his career, Elway won two Super Bowls and was named to the Pro Bowl nine times.  Although Elway had many seasons of solid play, his legacy was cemented with his clutch play at the end of games.

On this day, January 11th, in 1987, John Elway led the Broncos to an overtime win over the Cleveland Browns that has been referred to simply as, “The Drive.” With 5 minutes and 32 seconds left in regulation, the score 13-20, and the AFC Championship on the line, Elway needed to take his team 98 yards to give his team a chance at an overtime victory.   In 15 plays, Elway was able to do exactly what his team needed.  The Drive featured six completed passes with the final being a touchdown pass, as well as a resourceful 11-yard scramble.

After tying the game with 37 seconds remaining, the Broncos were able to win the game in overtime with a field goal. Unfortunately, Elway was not able to repeat the magic in Super Bowl XXI and the Broncos fell to the New York Giants with a final score of 39-20.
