The Catch

Dwight Clark spent his entire career with the San Francisco 49ers after being drafted in the 10th round in 1979.  While Clark may have not been a prominent NFL superstar, it did not stop him from creating a well-known legacy.  In 1982, Clark was on the receiving end of one of the most memorable catches in NFL playoff history.

On this day, January 10th, in 1982, Dwight Clark completes “The Catch” against the Dallas Cowboys.  Clark’s over-the-shoulder grab came after a 20-yard rollout pass by quarterback Joe Montana with less than a minute to play in the NFC Championship game.  At the time, the 49ers were down 27-21 and the touchdown, and subsequent extra point, propelled San Francisco to victory, as well as a ticket to the Super Bowl.

Clark ended the game with an impressive 120 yards on eight grabs and two touchdowns.  The 49ers went on to win Super Bowl XVI 26-21 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
