The Beatles make their last public performance on the roof of their London recording studio

Seven years of infinite success and the group called it quits. The Beatles’ members did not always agree with one another, and to settle disputes, their manager Brian Epstein would mediate. Sadly, after Epstein’s death the group was left to settle their own disputes. Instead of coming to a consensus, the group members ventured off in their own artistic direction. In attempt to bring the unity back to the group, The Beatles decided to do a film project for their last album Let It Be. Originally, the group could not agree on the location to film the live concert, but the essence of the show led them to play on the rooftop of Apple’s headquarters in London.

On this day, January 30, in 1969, the Beatles take the stage for their final live performance. They played a total of five songs with Billy Preston on the keyboard. London’s lunchtime crowd heard the concert above and stopped to listen, some even climbed on adjacent rooftops to watch the performance. The show lasted 42 minutes before the London police, due to a noise complaint, raided it. At the end of the show, John Lennon’s left the crowd by saying, “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition.” His words were adjoined to the end of Let It Be.

After the concert, tempers flared even more intensely between the group members. ,The Beatles officially split in the early 70’s and Paul sued the other three Beatles for the group’s separation.
