Houston, we’ve got an incorporation! The Republic of Texas incorporates Houston.

Much like everything nowadays, the quote “Houston we have a problem” is a misquote, it was really “Houston we have had a problem”, but the film Apollo 13 thought it better as a misquote. Perhaps Ron Howard was correct. Not that it has any true relation to the largest city in Texas, but Houston has become a household term simply because of this saying.

On this day June 5th, in 1837, the Republic of Texas incorporates Houston. Prior to becoming a state Texas was actually its own country. It existed 1836-1846 after the Texas Revolution broke free from Mexico. Upon Texas being admitted as a state started the Mexican-American War.

Houston was founded a year prior next to Buffalo Bayou, the main waterway in Houston which is 53 miles long. The city was named after Sam Houston, the president of the Republic of Texas at that time. Houston currently has a population over 2.1 million. Houston is a global city, and it is continuously growing with industries in aerospace, energy, and transportation. Houston’s climate is humid subtropical and almost a 1/3rd of its days have weather over 90 degrees.
