Terry Fox, on one leg, embarks on his cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

It is not just professional athletes who use sports as a way to inspire others.  Sometimes everyday people do something special that can inspire a nation or the entire world.

On this day, April 12th, 1980, Terry Fox embarked on his cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.  Terry did this run on one leg, as his right leg had been amputated as a result of cancer.  His run created a worldwide legacy, and it has resulted in over $500 million dollars being donated in his name.

Terry was able to run 3,339 miles over a 143 day period.  Unfortunately, the spread of his cancer force him to cut his run short. He left a lasting legacy on the world. A 1999 national survey named him as the greatest hero of Canada. Terry ended his run near Thunder Bay, and an enormous statue of him is displayed in memory of what he stood for.
