The Musical Sweet and Low starring Fanny Brice premieres on Broadway at Chanin’s 46th

Sweet and Low was a musical revue starring James Barton, Fanny Brice, Arthur Treacher, and George Jessel.  Produced by Bill Rose, it also features sketches by David Freedman and choreography was done by Danny Dare.  At the center of the musical was Fanny Brice, a comedienne, singer, and actress who created and starred in the top-rated comedy series, The Baby Snooks.

It was on this day, November 17, 1930, that the musical Sweet and Low starring Fanny Brice premiered on Broadway at Chanin’s 46th Street Theatre.  The musical originally ran for a week in Brooklyn at the Majestic Theatre before it moved to Broadway and ran for 184 performances.  Not a great success, producer Billy Rose moved it to the 44th Street Theatre which proved beneficial.

Fanny Brice went on to star in many other musicals including Everybody SingThe Great Ziegfeld, and Ziegfeld Follies.  She was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to the motion picture industry and died at the age of 59.
