Sweeney Todd, the Broadway Musical, closes at Uris Theater in New York.

“Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” was a musical thriller that opened on Broadway on March 1, 1979.  Directed by Harold Prince and starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury, the musical tells the story of Sweeney Todd, who returned to London after being sent away on false charges for 15 years only to find out that his wife had committed suicide.  She was raped by the same judge who had wrongly transported him, and Todd vowed to get revenge.

It was on this day, June 29, 1990, that “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber on Fleet Street” closed at the Uris Theater in New York City after 557 performances.  The production won the Tony Award for Best Musical and was nominated for nine Tony Awards.

Since the original Broadway production, it has been revived many times.  Tim Burton directed the film adaptation of the musical that starred Johnny Depp as Todd, who won a Golden Globe for his performance.  The film was highly popular and also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category.
