The Supremes release the song “Baby Love” under the Motown label

The Supremes are a legendary, all female, all African-American, all vocal trio. Out of Detroit, they were the most successful Motown Record investment and the sister act to The Primes, the all male African-American vocal group. The Supremes were in constant battle with the Beatles for the title of most popular artist in the USA.

On this day, September 17th, in 1964, The Supremes released their chart topping single Baby Love for the Motown record label. It became one of the most popular songs of its time and is one of the many #1 hits from The Supremes that charted the Billboard pop charts, the UK Singles Charts, and the Cash Box Magazine R&B Charts. Baby Love is featured in films such as Cooley High and many others.

The Supremes became the first Motown Act to have more than 11 number-one hit singles. In addition, their substantial success pioneered the way for other African-American musicians to make it to mainstream music.
