Steve Kerr hits buzzer beater helping Bulls beat Jazz in game 6 & earn NBA championship

When it came to those great Chicago Bulls teams, the hero is not always the Superstar.  That point was proven in 1993 when John Paxon hit the game winner against the Suns in the clinching game of the NBA finals.  And while many people watching the NBA finals expected Michael Jordan to be the one who hit the final dagger- it often was not the case.

It was on this day, June 13th, 2002, that Steve Kerr sunk a shot with 5 seconds left to help the Bulls defeat the Jazz in the NBA finals.  With the score tied, Michael Jordan was double teamed and he found a wide open Steve Kerr who confidently nailed the 15 foot jump shot to give the Bulls the 2 point lead. A great defensive play by Scottie Pippen sealed it and the Bulls were NBA champions once again.

The next season, the same two teams would again meet in the NBA finals.  The Bulls would once again prevail at home in game 6.  This time, however, Michael Jordan kept the ball for the last shot, hitting the game winner over Byron Russel with 5.2 seconds left in the game.  The fact that Michael had passed off the final shot  the year before, may have been a reason why the Utah Jazz didn’t double team him – and when you don’t double team the greatest player ever with the game on the line, you often pay the price.
