St. Petersburg is founded by Peter the Great.

Peter the Great is famous for having expanded Russia through military conquest. He was also part of a cultural revolution, bringing about science, literature, and a more western/European system. Peter’s second wife, Catherine the Great, has many legends said about her, including extreme promiscuity.

On this day May 27th, in 1703, St. Petersburg is founded by Tsar Peter the Great. From 1713-1728, and then 1732-1918, St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia, moving only after the communist revolution headed by Vladimir Lenin.

St. Petersburg’s current population is 4,8 million, and it is considered the most Western city in Russia – just as Peter intended.  This city is famous for its eclectic architecture and the golden domed Saint Issac’s Cathedral, with its highest point reaching 333 feet and a dome plated with real gold. Another famous church is Church of the Savior of Blood, which has vibrant colors of gold, pink, and teal. This city is a cultural center with over 200 museums, theaters, libraries, and hosts over 100 cultural events a year.
