The popular musical The Sound of Music wins five Academy Awards

The musical of all time, The Sound of Music, is based on a true story of a governess, Maria, who devoted herself to helping a singing family escape the Nazi occupied lands of Austria and Switzerland.

On this day, April 28th, in 1965, The Sound of Music is nominated and awarded five Academy Awards during the first Academy ceremony to be broadcasted in color. This musical won Best Picture, Best Musical Score, Best Director, Best Sound, and Best editing.

It marks history as a best seller for 20th Century Fox Studios and as its saving grace from bankruptcy.
