Sixteen-year-old reaches top of Mt. Everest

The Sherpa people of the Nepal – Tibet region number just 150,000, but have contributed to some of the greatest human achievements. Born and raised in one of the most mountainous regions in the the planet, they have developed an almost superhuman ability to traverse terrain too steep for even seasoned climbers, and to read quickly-shifting weather conditions along the footpaths. Only the most daring of expeditions make do without Sherpas; but for the people themselves, it’s all in a day’s work.

On this day, May 24, in 2001 a Sherpa named Temba Tsheri became the youngest person to ever reach the top of Mt. Everest. He had just turned sixteen two weeks before.

Tsheri actually began on his journey from Kathmandu to Everest at age 14, turning 15 along the way. He had to turn back due to weather, but made good on his promise to return. Even if he had made it the first time, though, he would not be the youngest person ever to climb to the top. That honor belongs to Jordan Romero, who made it at the age of 13 years 10 days – using three Sherpa guides, of course.
