Sammy Sosa sets the record for homeruns in a month – blasting his 19th homer in the month of June

During Baseball’s steroid era, Sammy Sosa was one of the most feared and exciting hitters.  The city of Chicago loved him, and he would often smash home runs out of the stadium and onto Waveland Avenue.

It was on this day, June 25th, 1998, that Sammy Sosa set the MLB record for homeruns in a month.  Sammy broke the record when he slammed his 19th homer in the month of June against the Detroit Tigers.  Ironically enough, Sammy broke the 61-year old record which was set by Detroit Tiger Rudy York.

Sammy Sosa would finish the classic 1998 season with 66 home runs.  He would have broken the record for home runs in a season had it not been for Mark McGwire who hit 70 home runs in the same season.  Unfortunately for Baseball fans, there would be a cloud of suspicion surrounding these records as they were hit in the Steroid Era by 2 players who have since been rumored to have cheated the game.
