Rosebowl Played in North Carolina

At the end of the college football season, teams from across the country compete in bowl games    The Rose Bowl Game has been held annually since 1916 at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California.  The Rose Bowl is referred to as “the Granddaddy of Them All,” because it is the nation’s oldest bowl game.

On this day, January 1st, in 1942, the Rose Bowl game between Oregon State and Duke was moved from its traditional location.  As the attack on Pearl Harbor took place less than a month prior, the game was played in Durham, North Carolina instead of Pasadena, primarily because of fears about another Japanese attack on the West Coast.

The undefeated Duke Blue Devils fell to the Oregon State Beavers with a final score of 16 to 20.  The Rose Bowl returned to its normal location the following year.
