Rookie Mark McGwire Record 39 Home Runs

Mark McGwire is one of the MLB’s most famous sluggers.  McGwire may be most well known for the famous home run record chase against Sammy Sosa in the 1998 season that ended with McGwire hitting a record 70 home runs, but the slugger had a full career with 12 All-Star appearances.

On this day, August 14th, in 1987, Mark McGwire broke the rookie home run record set by Al Rosen with his 39th homer.  McGwire would add to his home run total in his first season with the Oakland A’s and ended his rookie year 49 total home runs.  In recognition of his accomplishment, McGwire was named the American League Rookie of the Year that season.

McGwire ended his career as a player with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001 with 583 total home runs.  McGwire has recently returned to the Cardinals as a hitting coach.
