The stage version of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” opens in London.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a film adaptation to the British musical stage play, “The Rocky Horror Show” which was written by Richard O’Brien.  The film was meant to be a parody of horror and science fiction films as well as low-budget B-movies from the 1940s.  The movie is the first major Hollywood production to become a midnight movie, offbeat films shown during late-night programming.

It was on this day, June 19, 1973, that the stage version of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” opened in London.  “The Rocky Horror Show” was a story of a newly-engaged couple stranded in a storm and finding refuge in a crazy transvestite scientist’s home.  The show became both a critical and commercial success and became the “it” thing to do in London during the time.

Due to its high success in London, the show came to the U.S. and premiered at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles in 1974.  Since then, the play has premiered all around the world including New Zealand in 2010 and Singapore in 2011.
