The half-mile long Rainbow Bridge in Japan is completed.

The Shuto Expressway No. 11 Daiba Route – Port of Tokyo is a suspension bridge. The deck where people would walk on, or drive on, is held up by wires, and beneath this bridg are three towers supporting it.

On this day August 27th, in 1993, the Shuto Expressway No. 11 is completed.  It took nearly six years to complete this, as construction began in 1987. It was the public that named the bridge, Rainbow Bridge.

The massive bridge carries three transit lines, and has two levels. There is also a walkway on each side on both levels. Each walkway leads to different views of Tokyo Bay, and sometimes if it’s clear enough you can even see Mount Fuji. In addition to connecting the shores, the Rainbow Bridge was intended as a landmark. Its blue paint blends in with the skyline, and it reaches 417 feet at its highest.
