Portsmouth is given its first royal charter by King Richard I of England.

Portsmouth’s population density is even denser than London, it’s the only city in England that is. It has a population of 207,100, but its metropolitan population tops 1.5 million.  Settlement for this city goes back to Ancient Roman times, but in more modern times is said to have been founded in 1180 by John of Gisors.

On this day May 2nd, in 1124, King Richard (the Lionheart) of England gives Portsmouth its first royal charter. Upon being released as a captive, King Richard decided to create a fleet by Portsmouth, which is located off the South Coast of England.

Portsmouth house the world’s oldest dry dock, which is the ability for a ship to float in, and then drain it, and beneath it will supported and thus it can be repaired, or whatever else one would do to a boat that’s on a dock with no water.Portsmouth is England’s only Island City. This is because Portsmouth is separated from the mainland by a creek. Fun fact: Charles Dickens was born here.
