Pete Rose Breaks Ty Cobbs’ Hit Record

One of baseball’s most exclusive clubs is the 3,000 hit club.  Today, there are less than 30 members.  This being said, to amass more than 4,000 hits is one of Major League Baseball’s rarest accomplishments.  In 1921, Ty Cobb set the mark with 4,191 hits, a record that stood for more than five decades.

On this day, September 11th, in 1985, Pete Rose broke Ty Cobbs all-time hits record with his 4,192nd hit. The record came against San Diego Padres pitcher Eric Show. It was a single to left-center field.  Rose’s total number of hits increased to 4,256 before ending his career in 1986.

Rose still holds the Major League Baseball record for hit.  Rose also holds Major League Baseball records for career outs, games played, career at bats and a long list of others.
