The New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl on a last second field goal.

For many years, the Super Bowl lacked excitement as the games were rarely competitive.  One team dominated while the other team couldn’t get out of its own way.  And when the Carolina Panthers made the Super Bowl, many thought that the Patriots would steam roll them.

It was on this day, February 1st, 2004, that the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots played in a memorable Super Bowl game.  Super Bowl XXXVIII was filled with lead changes and late game heroics.  The Patriots won the game 32 – 29 and Tom Brady won his second Super Bowl MVP award in three seasons.

The fourth quarter of that Super Bowl is considered to be one of the greatest fourth quarters in Super Bowl history.  The Panthers scored 19 points while the Patriots scored 18 points.  However, the most important points were the ones scored by Patriots kicker Adam Vinateri on a last second game-winning field goal.
