The original “Star Trek” premieres on NBC

The series Star Trek was a televised vision of its producer Gene Roddenberry. He saw the future as one society where all races lived peaceably together with reason succeeding violence and science making the world a better place.  This show stirred society with its first multi-racial, multi-ethnic cast, and interracial dating.

On this day, September 8th, in 1966, Star Trek premiered on NBC at 8:30pm. This cult phenomenon was daring for its time. Nonetheless, its fan base boomed and when NBC threatened to cancel the second season, numerous fans wrote letters in protest. Sadly, NBC cancelled the show after its third season.

Although the original series was cancelled, reruns of Star Trek prevailed through the 70’s and even new games, action figures, books, television series, and films emerged in its name.
