Oregon country is to be jointly controlled by U.S. & Britain

Oregon Country was disputed territory in the northwest U.S., starting from the 19th century. British and French fur traders had been there for a while, trading with natives and Canada, and shipping the valuable goods back to Europe.

On this day October 20th, in 1818, Oregon Country is to be controlled by both the U.S. & Britain in the Treaty of 1818. At this time there weren’t that many U.S. settlers, and it was agreed that the U.S. could have everything south of the 49th parallel.

Despite Britain discouraging new American settlements, by the 1830’s many more Americans came.  In 1846, the treaty was renegotiated in the Oregon Treaty. In 1848 the United States incorporated the area as the Oregon Territory.
