The Oldsmobile company is founded

The company Oldsmobile first started off as Olds Mobile Works and was named after it’s founder Ransom Eli Olds. The company history goes all the way back to the 19th century when Olds built the first gasoline- powered vehicle at his families business in Geneva, Ohio.

On August 21st 1897, the Oldsmobile company is founded. For mass production and better accessibility the company moved to Detroit, but a fire that burned all the cars forced the company to move back to Lansing. Oldsmobile had a rough start, but nonetheless they were the first productive at making and selling cars.

By 1908 the company belonged to the General Motors conglomerate under which it would remain operating until 2004 when GM discontinued the brand.
