Ohio Art, makers of Etch-a-Sketch, founded

Henry Simon Winzeler originally wanted to become a dentist until his fascination for picture frames took control of his desires. He sold his dentist office and launched a manufacturing company, Ohio Art Company, with only 15 employees. From there it was history.

On this day, October 6th, in 1908, Henry Simon Winzeler founded the Ohio Art Company that manufactures metal picture frames and other novelty items. Exactly 52 years later the Ohio Art Company launched its first toy, Etch-A-Sketch. This classic innovation was invented as a drawing tool for preschoolers to use their imagination. Etch-A-Sketch became the toy store mainstay of the century with over 10 million sales.

The Ohio Art Company succeeded because it not only created innovative toys that promote creativity and learning, but it also produced diverse lithographic components for big businesses such as Starbucks and Disney.
