Sometimes greatness at the college level is a sign of things to come. And when a player rises to the occasion in the NCAA championship game, he is a player that we should keep our eyes on.
It was on this day, March 29th, 1982, that North Carolina beat Georgetown in the NCAA title game. The game winning basket was scored by the one and only Michael Jordan.
The game saw 15 lead changes, and neither team could get a comfortable lead. With 17 seconds to go, Jordan hit a jump shot from the left wing to give UNC a 63 – 62 lead. Georgetown then went down the court, and Fred Brown famously mistook James Worthy for a teammate and he passed him the ball. James Worthy was fouled, he missed both foul shots, but Georgetown didn’t have enough time left to take a realistic shot – and the game was over. Michael Jordan would later say that the game winning shot was a major turning point in his career.
