3 Months after naming the league – National-American Football – the league takes back its NFL name

The most popular sport in America continues to be football.  Ratings for regular season NFL games continue to eclipse post-season ratings for the other 3 major professional sports.  The NFL has been around for a very long time, however, at the beginning of the ’50s, there was some confusion as to what the name would be.

It was on this day, March 3rd, 1950, that the National Football League took back its name. Three months earlier, the league had changed its name to the National-American Football League.

The rest would be history as the NFL name would not only stick, but become one of the biggest brands in the world.  And while some people who like to say NFL stands for “No Fun League,” the vast majority of sports fans love the NFL and all of the other major sports leagues in America have taken notice.
