For what is now New York, a charter is given The Dutch West India Company for New Netherlands.

On June 2, 1621 the Dutch West India Company was given a charter to exist as a dominating monopoly of trade between the Americas, Caribbean, and Africa. It was due to this company that the Americas came to have so many Dutch. This company was an enterprise like many others, including the Dutch East India Company and the Hudson Bay Company.

On this day June 3rd, in 1621, one day after it was given a charter to exist, the Dutch West India Company is given a charter for New Netherlands. This charter can be read, and quite a document it is with almost 5000 words. This was business.

The New Netherlands were located at the southeast end of Cape Cod. New Netherlands settlements became current day New York, New Jersey, Delaware, & Connecticut. In 1674 under the Treaty of Westminster ending the Third Dutch-Anglo War, New Netherlands was given to the British. It was set up as a fur trading outpost and for many years it was a highly successful commercial business.
