Named after a small Island off the coast of Normandy, New Jersey becomes an English colony.

New Jersey is located on the east coast and borders the south of New York. Prior to its colonization, New Jersey had been inhabited by Native American tribe, Lenape. Skip over a few hundred years and you wouldn’t even realize that New Jersey has a vast history. But New Jersey is one of the oldest and most densely populated states of the U.S.

On this day March 12th, in 1664, New Jersey would become an English colony. In the early 17th century, New Jersey had been part of a large colony of the Dutch, New Netherlands.  In 1664 Colonel Richard Nicolls came into New York Harbor with his British Navy fleet and seized control of the New Netherlands colony.

New Jersey was one of the original 13 colonies that revolted from the British Empire and signed its own constitution alleging its independence on July 2, 1776, two days prior to the U.S. Constitutions signing. During the industrial revolution factories sprung up producing silk, textiles. Thomas Edison had factories in New Jersey as well. In the 21st century, New Jersey is the third wealthiest state in the U.S. New Jersey is also home to the east coast Vegas, Atlantic City, where it was deemed legal to gamble.
